I Am Not My Hair: New Journey

I am not my hair

After completing the Daniel Fast, I did a lot of thinking about self-love and identity. I am coming to the realization that I am beautiful regardless of what anyone thinks about me.   Some may think that I’m beautiful because of my hair, and I’m going to change that.

With that being said, I am locking my hair.  I know what everyone is thinking, ” don’t do it, your hair is so beautiful why would you loc it?” I know, it is beauty, but it will still be beautiful even in locs. Trust me…

If you read my previous post, this year I am on a mission to truly experience life and all that it has to offer. And my hair hinders me from truly doing that, and I am over it. It takes too much time to wash and detangle, all to put it in a bun. No more… no more detangling,  no more spending 45 mins to deep condition. I’m  reclaiming my life. I need to be free from the bondage of hair. I know to some this may sound too deep, you may be thinking ” it’s only hair”. Yes to some it is only hair, but to others, it’s more.  This doesn’t change who  I am, I will still be my same ole’ sassy self, but a better version of myself.  I am done being a slave to my hair.

Oh, know that this summer I’m getting in the pool. Silly thought I know but as black women, our hair keeps us from experiencing things such as the pool. No more of that for me.  I am truly about to taste life.

I am so excited for a  change!!!

I know for a fact this year is a year of change. So many things in my life are about change and evolve.  Knowing that change is a good thing and with change comes growth. I refuse to stay in the place I was in last year.  Changing my hair will be one physical change that will happen this year.

But seriously, I can’t wait to see what my locs will look like. I am excited to embark on my loc journey. I will document this experience and share any tips and tricks that I learn. I am also excited to change society’s mindset on locs. So many people think that locs are “unclean” and ” unkempt”, but I  will show you that this is not true for all people with locs. Society thought the same thing about natural hair until we had to show them they were wrong!  I work for a Fortune 500 company, I will show you that locs can be ” clean ” and ” professional”.

Now watch me work!!!
